John 16:12

I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.

This passage has long been one of my favorites, because it reveals a spirit of inquiry and open-mindedness seemingly denied by by the common practice of religion today. I hear in "He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears" a strong allegory for scientific objectivity, and the thought some scientists express that "God handed down two books, the Bible and the Book of Nature".

Someone here, might even have been you, pointed out that if viewed as allegory, Genesis is not at all inconsistent with science. It seems so self-defeating of Creationists to nit-pick over the details of things like dates, when Genesis is already a respectable expression of truth told as a tale.

There needn't be any conflict between science and religion. Trouble only arises when either party tries to poach on the territory of the other. Scientists, speaking as scientists, cannot legitimately have an opinion about the existence of God. The question is a nullity in scientific terms. By the same token, separation of science and religion grants a scientist the freedom to have faith.
