are many teachers who will refer parents of behavior problem children to the doctors in a heartbeat if the kid is disruptive. I think schools once had other methods for handling those problems. Of course the MD doesn't have to prescribe the meds.
I think more often it is a desperation to get their grades up. Our boy was not a behavior problem at all but his teachers said his mind tended to wander. In fact he is such a nice kid his 2nd grade teacher did not have the heart to grade him truthfully and allowed him to fall far behind. We had tried tutoring and were told that places like Sylvan are not helpful in most cases.
Whatever one might think about the meds they have helped him but we know they are not a permanent solution and he needs to stop at some point.
