Not to say that some unforseen event couldn't suddenly cause economic problems...But the US economy is proving to be amazingly resiliant. Europe would kill for 4.9% unemployment with zero inflation despie the recent run-up in oil prices...
For the most part, the only people in the USA not working are those who choose not-to look.
Corporate balance sheets are awash in cash. That is capital that is just waiting for a place to be invested...And that bodes very well for the stock market, interest rates, and the US and world economy in general.
The biggest risk we face is that we run out of workers and wages suddenly start to spike.
It could happen, but even that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. The economy really is looking pretty good right now.
The only even that could really upset the apple cart right now would be (1) a Democratic victory in the 2006 elections (more than 12 months away--And there would be a long lag of several years between when they were elected, and when any of their economy killing proposals got enacted.) or (2) A nuclear war somewhere on the globe that killed a few hundred million consumers. Either would be equally devastating to the economy.
