Thinking in terms of attacking immigration as the answer to controlling growth is short-sighted in my eyes. The solution is not a politically-correct one at all because you'll get huge opposition from the religious communities. We have to slow down population growth worldwide. You're right that you can't stop the hordes from crossing the borders at least without a huge amount of bloodshed and chaos. Nobody in their right minds wants that. What you can do though is challenge organizations like the Catholic Church to stop discouraging birth control methods in third world countries.
Good luck in these days where we can't even agree on keeping religion out of our own political and public institutions. However, it's a fight we have to take on and soon.
