This sounds suspiciously like the "denial of service" I had before dumping Norton out on its ass... The first symptom, which I didn't even relate to the main problem at the time, was inexplicable delays in the shutdown routine.

I know you don't use Norton, so that's not the culprit. But the trojan very well could have been.

I'm not clear from your post -- is it that WP can't open that file, but can open others? Is WP itself hosed -- i.e., it won't open anything, regardless of location? Or are you missing other functionality besides WP?
