How is a campaign contribution different from a bribe?

Seriously, one is legal and the other isn't, but both are intended to buy favor. I admit I have not been following the Abramoff matter all that closely. Is it really all that different from the thousands of other cases of people trying to buy influence, legally or otherwise?
