What's ironic about all this is that Hamas gained power through democracy. It's going to be impossible now for Bush to stand up against them or not support the new government without showing the huge hypocrisy of his policy of promoting democratic reforms in the area.
The same thing is happening in Iraq with the Shiites taking the bulk of the democratic power because of their overwhelming numbers.
What people forget is that we're not a democracy. We're a republic. There's a vast difference with the latter giving power not only to majority but also states and regional areas. Our Constitution and Bill of Rights also has ensured strict prohibitions against discrimination and the founder's distrust of authority ensured that enough checks and balances were in place to prevent one ideaology from taking over. A pure democracy would've failed miserably. Obviously our separation of church and state has also helped to prevent the type of government that Iraq seems to be falling into.
