The problem is that our success in the middle East demands a different strategy than the one embraced by George Bush.
It was a terrible mistake to start a war in Iraq. Our interests would have been better served by focussing on finishing our work in Afghanistan and giving foreign policy priority to the Palestinian/Israeli conflict, instaed of ignoring it. That didn't happen, Tom.
The conflict in the Middles East starts and finishes with the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. Solve that and the other issues are milktoast. Instead Bush has only created more intransigent issues and made the whole problem more complex and difficult to solve. His naive belief that by bringing democracy to Iraq we could fix the Middle East is just lunacy. All he has done is make things worse.
