The number of military deaths after 3 years of war has almost equaled the number of deaths suffered by military personnel in the 1980. Back in 1980, 2392 active duty military personnel died. Of those, 8 servicemen died in the aborted Desert One raid to rescue the hostages being held by Iran. The rest died in "peacetime". Military service is often dangerous even when a war isn't underway.
