re: Alternative fuels

Thank you Nick.

On a recent trip to Brazil, my wife and I noticed the same, with most vehicles having LPG tanks, diesel, gas, or a combination of 2 of these. We noticed that there were actually more LPG fueling stations than gas stations, although the driver we hired showed us that the responsiveness in his particular vehicle when using the LPG was lower performance than the gasoline.

I do recall reading an article that Brazil produces some ~70% of its fuels thru renewable energy sources, bio diesel, methanol, ethanol and some of the gas from a by-product of their land fills.

We live in Mexico, so higher fuel prices in the US don't really bother us. We are used to $3-$4 dollars per gallon and $80 to fill up my pick up. Without starting a political discussion, I do think it is just and fair that the US public be forced into paying equal fuel prices like most of the rest of the world. (leaving the Big oil gouge allegations out of this discussion) Fuel has been far more expensive across Europe and other parts of the world for many years. IMHO, these higher prices are the only reason why the US is finally taking a more serious look at alternative fuels.
a) the publis is demanding it and
b) the relative prices are becoming reasonable

The new Ford F250 Concept truck (if ever actually built) will have a unique three fuel system, employing gasoline, methanol and hydrogen in an internal combustion engine which has two sets of injectors. There is an interesting article about the motor on Ford's website. The claim it will have an enormous range and there would be no need to stop or turn off the engine when switching between fuel types. What would be really interesting is if the engineers also added a hybrid type system that generated electricity from the inertia and increased the overall economy of the system. Only if they could find room for all of those batteries!!!

I really hope the powers that be in the US are smart enough to realize that they need to be on the cutting edge of new technology, if they wish to remain the world leaders.

I would rather see the US as world leaders than any of the other alternatives - IMHO
