One part of real thinking is the realization that analysis is a means, not an end. Or that many things are, indeed, black-and-white, i.e. mutually exclusive, like "alive" and "dead." Or that despite what our children are taught in colleges, that the inability to arrive at a conclusion is not always a sign of intellectual sophistication.
A thirteen-year-old, presented with the proposition that there is no proper way to judge if al Qaeda and the type of society it represents is better or worse than America, would laugh in your face. One needs to take such a child and have his ability to reason poisoned in the education system until all his thinking is about the process of thought, and never about the product. And to never, ever make a judgment.
I did notice that you completely ducked the entire subject of the post. "Enlightened thinkers" are quite skilled at evasion. That is, after all, part of "process."
