re: The pointlessness of the argument on terrorism

There are those that believe that Islamic radicals can be brought to reason by negotiation and those that believe they cannot.

The argument is "pointless" only if you stipulate that there is no objective evidence that can give you an answer to the above. I say there is more than enough evidence to come to a conclusion.

Like many other big questions, it's not that there aren't obvious answers. It's that the answers aren't the ones people want to hear.

If people like bin Laden, Zarqawi, Narallah, and others of that type are, in fact, intractable, then those who support endless negotiation get backed into a corner where they really don't want to be, where the only possible actions are not pleasant ones.

After all, if someone can convince themselves that there is a "third way" out there, somewhere, somehow (no details necessary), they can take immense comfort in that, and then lay all the blame for the current situation on American politics, where everything is non-threatening, and controllable.

It's much less frightening to believe all our problems can be solved with a U.S. election, than with a war of civilizations.
