I would think the only things that really need to come back to earth are people, extraterrestial samples, and small representative samples of experiments. What heavy equipment is necessary to bring back?
Think how much more compact everything could be if we didn't have to bring people to orbit along with all their survival equipment.
Meanwhile it is shuttle operations as usual, delay, delay, delay and of course massive costs for the return.
