What is morality?
Plato quoted Socrates as saying that morality was doing the right thing, because it is the right thing to do. A rather simple statement, possibly, but it covers the bases. Socrates went on to say that religion had no effect on morality because to do, or not do something because of fear of punishment is to act under coercive influences and would not be a moral act.
A Socratic morality implies a cognitive and sentient actor. A madman or an idiot or a savage would thus have different standards of morality. The question is relevant to today because religion has worked so very hard over a long period of time to co-opt the ownership of what morality is.
