Religion does have something to contribute.
The Ten Commandments are a good start, although they have both shortcomings and superfluous entries. The Golden Rule is a philosophical principle of great power and undoubted good sense, as evidenced by the fact that most great religions have their own version of it.
But the Socratic princple you brought up concerning coercion is also relevant, although I never cared for Platonic priciples. Give me the pre-Socratics any time.
