The right has been hip for a long time, they just refused to say anything out of loyalty to their cause. Like fundamentalists who reject evolution because it undermines the infallibility of scripture (but certainly makes no judgement on religious faith per se), the ranks have been closed in the hope that they might get lucky in Iraq and they could "save the phenomenon". What's at stake here isn't Iraq, it's tax and regulatory policy. The irony lies in that, as in the evolution analogy, the Iraq issue isn't about ideology at all; the Democrats made the same mistake in Viet Nam. It's about competence and about allowing ideology to cloud judgement. LBJ had plenty of Democrats questioning his war.
Two things are happening now: the rank and file Republicans are distancing themselves from the administration for political reasons, and to salvage what they can from the domestic ramifications of this foreign policy catastrophe. I suspect some may even agree with the White house but are still abandoning the sinking ship to save their own political skins. And perhaps even a few are doing it just because its right.
