From one angle, I might question whether the GOP had undergone a revolution if Gingrinch is its standard-bearer in 08. Seeing as how Newt was the first leader of the New Right, it'd be more of an internal purge and retrenchment than true reform. Still, I'd concede that his successors have surpassed him in ruthlessness, bile, viciousness, and corruption, so rewinding to a more respectable Newt Rightist would be better than the status quo. (Was that a mini-masterpiece of damning with faint praise, or what? ;-) )
My opinion of Gingrinch isn't uniformly one of revulsion. On the humbler issues he occasionally offered a glimpse of intelligence, such as his suggestion to provide laptop computers to schoolkids (so common sensical as to induce concussion in 9 out of 10 listeners). But then he had to go and float a brainstorm for "educational camps" for African-African kids, and wasn't that creepy?
