It's all "America's bullying foreign policy," you see. I heard the same thing, hell, the same phrases, during the Cold War. If it wasn't for American imperialism and militarism, the Soviet Union would have been no threat at all. Jimmy Carter had to have his face pounded into the truth. Most of us knew it for years before that.
Most liberals and 60's leftists who were going to have a reality check had it on 9/11. Others just plugged the Islamist threat into the same "mostly harmless" category they put the Soviet Union, with the same rhetoric.
Another reality check: We will stay in Afghanistan at most about a year longer than we stay in Iraq. The same tactics that would make the United States flee Iraq will work exactly the same there, for exactly the same reasons, and the same forces in our own country will attempt to wreck that war as well.
My brother flew cargo planes in the first Gulf War. My children will make their own decisions.
