There is no big ideological divide in the universe, that's what they tell the privates. The generals all know it's about money and power. The Crusades weren't about Allah and Jesus, they were about real estate.
All the rest is what they pound into the the cannon fodder so they'll go fight. That doesn't mean some political or economic arrangements aren't better than others, and it doesn't stop any system from going south when taken over by the wrong people. It's just that what really causes misery in this world is guys in suits who prefer the office to the shop floor.
Oversimplification? Perhaps, but that's the truth as I see it.
