"There is no big ideological divide in the universe, that's what they tell the privates."
And it's probably a good thing to tell privates. The alternative to this would be to try to get into the complexity providing the privates with some ideology that would conflict with what the miltary is trying to do. BUT just because the miltary tells a private that as far as the miltary is concerned there is no ideological divide in the Universe, it does not mean much other than what the miltary needs. In other words it's about what the miltary is doing- it's about direction.
On a smaller/tactical scale it's similar to when US miltary was fighting in Europe which could summed up as the faster we beat the germans the faster we go home. Forget everything, but where you are now and how fast can you get to Berlin. To take this as some kind complete philosophy of life could get some strange results applying it after the war is over.
All idealogy indicates some direction- save the whales, stop making nuclear weapons, are mostly slogans that part or can be incorporated into a bigger direction. Though one could actually devote one's life to saving whales.
The universe may or may not be divided into two [or more] ideologies. You could also say that the Earth is not divided into countries- meaning people have reached *some* agreement about where borders are, but earth itself or in terms that don't take into consideration what people hold to be true, the earth isn't divided in some objective sense.
But of course individuals and groups can understand the universe/world by characterizing it in broad terms. Failing to understand diffences or insisting there are no difference is merely being or insisting that other people be unwise [stupid/foolish/ignorant/unhuman/etc].
