As soon as one starts an argument, one has already lost.
The presentation of viewpoints, unemotionally, is the goal, I shoot for. If I get emotional in the presentation of views and/or data - I consider it a loss. Emotions turn people off. They fail to persuade and trigger hostile reactions.
However, I do try to get a handle on whatever emotionalizes me and use the good ol' mirror principle to see what I failed to see before. And so even such losses are put to good use, turning them into a 'win'.
I think everyone here has been influenced to one degree or another by other's viewpoints. At the very least it has been informative as to the various mindsets held, not only in differing geographical locations, but socio-economic and age-related disparities as well.
If one comes here solely to win arguments and put others down, one quite quickly makes an ass of oneself, except perhaps in the eyes of other asses who will find that trait quite attractive.
