Carol Lam

One thing that stands out in the docs is how Carol Lam, the San Diego USA who prosecuted Duke Cunningham (former R-CA), was right at the top of the purge list. Interesting, Samson, Gonzales' chief of staff, sends an email to Meiers about how they need to deal right away with the "real problem" they have with Lam the very same day that the morning papers had reported that Lam was expanding her investigation to include Rep. Lewis (R-CA) as well. Several other emails like that too. Even without knowing all the ins and outs, it sure seemed smelly to me.

As I noted below, firing US Atty's for policy reasons is certainly allowed, though nearly unprecedented (a news report I just heard suggested that Nixon, Carter, and Clinton each fired one other than the initial replacement upon taking office) and not necessarily wise.

Firing because USAs were not cranking up enough investigations of Democrats or otherwise pursuing partisan political goals is problematic.

Firing a USA because you're hoping to sway / end an onoing investigation of a GOP officeholder is way over the line, and probably does consistitute an actual illegal act.
