Proximity to the issue doesn't necessarily imply wisdom

I just don't find it reasonable that the solution to gun violence is more guns.

OTOH, I have to agree with the Former Scott Evil (though not with his reasoning), in a post on another board when he states there's no solution for this problem. IMHO, the "right to bear arms" (and the consequent right to use them) has been a complete disaster for this country, but Americans *will not* give up their weapons any more than they'll give up their cars. It won't happen. Ever.

A big part of the problem (again, my humble opinion) is that Americans as a people are not outraged, or even particularly put off, by violence. It's a deep part of this country's heritage.

Years ago, while I was still living in Canada, a friend of mine flew into LA. He heard on the radio, the day of his arrival, there were twelve murders by knife in that city. Twelve separate murders by knife in a single city. Not even counting murders by gun. In Canada that day, the entire country, not a single murder by any means.

Take away America's guns, we'll stab each other. Take away our knives, we'll bash each other to death with baseball bats. Don't have a bat? That's ok, there's a shovel in the garden shed.

Raoul asks why this seems to occur so often in America. I think the answer is simple: we're an extremely violent people. Put more guns on the street? Yikes. I guess we'll all need Kelvar vests.
