First, I have my doubts that the shooter in this case had a concealed carry permit for off-campus anyway. People may say this is beside the point, but if we're going to talk about the law, we should talk about all of it.
I know a lot of people with concealed carry permits, mostly men, but not all. At least one of these people got the permit because gun control activists ticked him off. He never carries; he just has the permit.
The others have the permit in case they get into a situation, when going from place to place for their sporting or hunting activities, in which the way they're transporting their pistols might be construed as "concealed". With a concealed carry permit, you don't have to worry about that. The people I know who are most likely to carry a loaded gun concealed on her person are women, and believe me, these women know how to shoot. They are not quick on the trigger, but have no compunction about shooting a hole through their purses to stop a man intent on doing them harm.
I, obviously, don't carry. I work in an environment where children are all over the place. The only place for me to keep it secured makes it impossible for me to access it in case of need. For me to bring a pistol into such a workplace would be irresponsible in the extreme. Except for the police officers, no one I know takes their guns to work.
We have four marksmen (three of them markswomen) in our family. Two are pistol shooters, and three have had their names on trophies and in the newspaper, as the rifle team is a varsity sport where I live. The kids on the various sportsmen's club and high school teams, as well as the adults, are not the unbalanced people who shoot others. There is, in fact, a great deal of interaction and mutual support among the members of these groups, as well as peer pressure to behave responsibly with their firearms.
People with concealed carry permits are just not in the trouble demographic. They're investigated much more seriously than people who purchase firearms for "home protection". Chances are, also, they don't carry. As usual, the ones who comply with the law are not the ones to worry about.
Locally, we've had killings, including multiple murders, committed with rope, knives, and ballpeen hammers to the head. What they all have in common is deranged people living tormented lives in a society that stigmatizes mental illness (thus encouraging its concealment) and doesn't provide for its treatment. If we want to stop crazy behavior, we have to help crazy people. Being angry at gun owners and their insistance that they, too, are presumed innocent doesn't accomplish anything meaningful.

- I disagree.
- Proximity to the issue doesn't necessarily imply wisdom
- South korea, where the killer was from, bans gun ownership and guess what...
- No, I don't have to listen to this guy.
- I'd ALMOST think you believe that silliness. Think for a minute.
