Culture of Passivity
Commentary by Mark Steyn.
I've lost track of another link I read earlier today. In one classroom, the students debated for 20 minutes whether or not to barricade the door. Finally, just before the shooter arrived, one student took it on himself to haul a large desk to the door and block it. The shooter couldn't get in, and his few shots through the door hit nobody.
There are other examples beyond this particular event. As Steyn says, this isn't cowardice. It's passivity--being trained to wait for someone to tell you what to do and how to act in a difficult situation.
I have more optimism about human nature, and believe that as more stories come out of this, more heroes will emerge. We'll see.
