Funny you mention that. I DID lose a good friend on Election day sky writing along the coast saying VOTE. He was an experienced champion aerobatic pilot and we had been friends for almost 30 years.
A veteran with a purple heart, he had survived two crashes in the jungle and a couple of major surgeries. But he loved flying, even let me have the controls once on the way to Key West.
Something went wrong with the engine and he turned around and headed down the landing runway to prevent any accidents. Seeing as he had just refuelled and was carrying oil and smoke, the turn was too sharp. Although he landed it, it exploded on contact.
Three weeks earlier I was trying to convince him he needed to write his autobiography. He always said he wanted to go that way, if it was meant to be.
