re: Not sure you got his point

Dear Art:

[Your anger against Castro is more than justified. He's a tyrant and has brought way more bad than good to that land. However, our isolationist methods certainly have not worked at all. One of the main enemies of a totalitarian society is information. By keeping tourists and businesses out of that land, Castro is free to put out the propaganda he chooses. I think the thing that finally brought down the Soviets was the influx of western society to their citizens, not the military buildups.]

The reason our 'isolationist methods' have not worked is becuase we, WE, not just the U.S. but other countries have chosen, 'chosen' to let him do as he chooses because he has let the rest of the world know that he got control in '59. World countries have given him that right because they thought that the entire of Cuba was behind Castro and they deemed Cuba as a 'sovereign' nation, a republic of sorts... so hands off. If anyone says or suggests otherwis, it would have been wrong. Castro indeed has free tourism from Canada, Spain and a host of other countries yet his people suffer, they really do and have since he took over. Ahh, you say "I think the thing that finally brought down the Soviets was the influx of western society to their citizens, not the military buildups", true. Think about this, Cuba wasn't that big of an influence although it played one in the '60s with Russian backing. Cuba is an island. It's always been an island nation that can and has been isolated from the rest of the world. Castro knows this and has used it to his advantage.
