That's probably about right, but is written with a rather judgmental attitude.
When one realizes many people are sheep and imitate what surrounds them in a quest to offset certain feelings of insecurity, one sees that there is not that much difference between the motivations that drive the EMO kid, the gangsta rapper, the guy with a truck and a confederate flag, the Harvard graduate or the society debutante.
The girls swooning for Frank Sinatra in the forties, and Elvis in the fifties, find their evolutionary descendants in the girls who listen to EMO bands today. And the boys (and girls) will imitate whomever and whatever they feel is popular - thereby making them feel more secure.
It's rather sad actually.
As an aside, one has to realize that teens and strong male role models don't mix. Teen girls have been weaned on Elvis, Tab Hunter, Fabian, Sinatra, James Dean, Crosby, Duran Duran, NKOTB, etcetera - real male role models are threatening to girls and so today's EMO and High School musical effete male portrayals are just par for the course.
West Side Story's strong male role models anyone?
;-)
