It is a story, and a believable one.
A lot of businessmen would like nothing better than to create a buisness that they can sell for hundreds of millions and either retire or go on to the next project. I don't think there's anything wrong with IBM for telling that story.
Also disagree with you on the image of the anglo. I thought he was more carpentry nerd than Marlboro man.
