The point is that the "progress" is an illusion

It was the height of folly and historical ignorance for the Bush administration to think that such powerful, deep rooted, violently competing sectarian and terrorist forces in and around Iraq could be cured by a few years of US military occupation...these potent forces were held in check only by Saddam's brutal but highly efficient reign of terror, and it didn't take a genius to foresee what would happen if Saddam were eliminated...without a viable alternative brought forth by the Iraqis themselves, not imposed by an alien military force.

When the last US soldier crosses the border on his way home, get ready to witness a civil war and a slaughter of unimaginable proportions in Iraq. That'll be George Bush's true legacy to the Iraqi people. Right now there are hundreds of thousands of Sunnis living in exil in Syria and Jordan, armed to the teeth by sympathetic allies throughout the Arab and Muslim world, same goes for Al Queda forces in and near Iraq, and a similar grim prospect for the various competing Shiite militias eager to eliminate their Sunni enemies as well as each other...
