It's my understanding that even through the darkest days on WW2's eastern front, there was in fact still diplomatic communication, deeply hidden, between Berlin and Moscow.
If those two belligerants could keep talking at that point in history, then *anyone* can keep talking...meaning of course that the prudent course for us would be to maintain open channels even to our most hated enemies...namely, al Qaeda.
