Indeed it was quite a comparison. I did observe that Clinton's beginning to show his age, and perhaps when Hillary gets into the White House a more appropriate title for Bill than First Gentleman might be First Grandpa. Listening to him talk about his philanthropic work, I can picture the guy puttering in the sun to put a cherry atop the inheritence sundae he's leaving his grandkids. Asked if he thought that the philanthropy might someday eclipse his contribution as President, he smiled gently and said "no, it would take a long time to [equal what he'd done {paraphrasing}]". Pulling it off twice, no, but a little icing on the cake, sure.
Another exercize in contrasts hit me when GW Bush was inaugurated. There was a scene in which GHWB and Clinton were standing shoulder-to-shoulder, with W a little off to the right (prophetically), and it hit me, "geez, he's just as tall as many bigger men". Because up until then, seeing W alone on stage in debates or standing behind a lectern, I'd pictured him as a small man, sort of the Right's Dennis Kucinich. I didn't realize that the little guy's physically tall.
And then I remember thinking a sort of prayer: "Oh gawd, I hope his single term is a peaceful one", because I couldn't see as small a man as George W. Bush transforming into a leader in a crisis. I hope I didn't single-handedly put a hex on things...but no, I'm not superstitious.
