You can take more paragraphs to not answer a question than any non-academic I have seen. You must be a hoot in company meetings.
You almost came close with the words "documented abuses." But you know as well as I do that outside the fevered imaginations of those who think we are just inches away from the camps, there has been no serious erosion of freedom in this country. For most people, having to take their shoes off in the airport is about it.
I'm not interested in what you think "might" happen.
A government under firm Democratic control "might" take control of the oil industry, set a maximum wage, or do any of those countless loopy things to us that leftists dream of, and that are considered "good" intrusions of the State into our lives. The kinds of things Americans live with every day, and more of them every year. Stocked up on contraband transfats yet?
Nor am I interested in the weird idea that all kinds of terrible things are happening right now, but nobody hears about them because it's all secret. That way lies the tinfoil fedora.
The U.S. government has a lot of powers if it ever actually uses them. The bad news is that this has long predated both Bush and the Patriot Act. I could go back and list the "emergency protocols" created under previous administrations, except that I did that once and it didn't make an impression then, either.
To anybody with eyes and a brain, the Bush administration is no more "oppressive" than the Ford administration was. And liberals dressing the effigy up with rubber fangs and and a brown shirt doesn't change that.
You been reading up on the European Parliament lately?
