The romance of surveillance. People are generally boring.

I've sat surveillance enough to know that it would be impossible to find anyone to pay attention to all of those cameras. (In all fairness, one doesn't have to sit surveillance very long at all to discover that. Drive down the block, park, scrunch down behind the steering wheel, and watch. Don't miss anything, note all activity. Watch some more. Gotta pee? Use a can. Figure out what to do with it. Keep watching while you're doing that. There will be a test. Explain to the neighbor who comes out and asks what you're up to that you're waiting for a friend, and make it convincing. You don't want anyone to tell someone else on the block you're watching for something. However, the cameras and binoculars you keep at easily at hand will scare the hell out of him. The towel over them isn't going to fool him for very long. When the inevitable cop comes along identify yourself, and since you're either a civilian or acting civilian, tell him/her it's a civil matter, and keep watching. By the way, after the sun goes down it will be easier to pee. Always keep your feet off the brake pedal, and of course you've disabled the lights which come on when the door opens. Above all, stay awake, alert. Keep noting all activity. After you've had all the fun and excitement you can stand, watch for another couple of hours.)

One of the realities which never occurs to most people is that they are boring. We are all boring. Our lives are not exciting to others, and even if they are exciting to us, watching from the outside it isn't easy to tell. Someone walking down the street may think they are the center of the Universe, that anyone who could would be staring at them, checking out the clothing, hair, shoes, looking for wrinkles, dirt, smears. And commenting on those to themselves. Wrong. After you've seen 10 trysts you realize it's not YOUR tryst, and not all that engrossing. I've watched a lot of people, and while I have a few funny stories about what I've seen people who weren't the subject doing, quite a few really, only 0.1% was interesting. However, that percentage could be VERY interesting, but they were the subjects, and almost anything they did would be fascinating. People going about their daily activities is not, repeat not interesting after a while.

(Now, next test. Get up at 4:00AM, get out on the street at 5:00AM. Pick a neighbor you don't know, and follow him/her as they drive to work, without being noticed. Note where work is, what time they arrive, and where they go. Good job. Go home and take a nap.)

Now tell everyone how interesting those people where. How you just can't wait to do it again. If you can remember.
