Cameras are a fact of modern life, and especially in an age of terrorism, and street crime they have great utility. I know I am against the liberal grain on this one, but I am also surprised how many conservatives agree with liberals on this issue.
They need not be monitored continuously, but tape is available if criminal evidence needs to be collected later. I see no objection to the state using them (in public places, I must emphasize that!) any more than I object to businesses using them to protect against shoplifters or to help discourage employee theft or robbery. Putting cameras in toilets or changing rooms is something else again. They are not public places.
I see the cameras as analogous to voice recordings. No one wants their telephone messages eavesdropped on, but you shouldn't complain if someone records your remarks on a radio talk show.
