"CO2 IS a greenhouse gas. -
True on Venus where the concentrations are many magnitudes higher than on earth. We also think it has a small effect on Earth, although how much of an effect is not known entirely...Which is why we are having this argument. The only way to know for sure is to speculate of climate models with a lot of unknown variables..."
CO2 IS a greenhouse gas. Regardless of planet.
As far as Venus goes. What if Venus instead of 90+ atm of CO2 it had 90 atm of Nitrogen [a non-greenhouse gas], what would the average temperature then be?
I think it's a safe guess to say it would be at least oven temperature. It's possible it could as hot or even hotter than the Venus with CO2 atmosphere.
Another way to look at it, what is Venus's temperature with it's mostly CO2 atmosphere when you at a elevation in which the atmospheric pressure is 1 atm [earth's pressure] and of course in the shade?
Or if Venus was at Earth distance, it couldn't be as hot as it is now [hotter than a oven [+740 K ] though it may be somewhere over 400 K [oven temperature]. Now with Venus at earth distance, go to elevation in which CO2 was at Earth's pressure- this could quite a comfortable temperature- if not pretty cold.
Finally, without any greenhouse affect earth would be frozen solid and probably have much more violent weather.
Now, what if earth had nothing adding a greenhouse affect except CO2- no water or any other greenhouse gas.
If you just had the nitrogen/oxygen mix we have now and the CO2 level we have now, then it would be a frozen ice ball. And I would *guess* that if Earth's atmosphere was mostly CO2 at 1 Atm [about 2500 times more CO2 then we currently have in our atmosphere] then the average global temperature would still be below freezing [currently Earth is around 15 C]. Put even a small amount of methane [another greenhouse gas- but more effective] in atmosphere [say 1%] and that might make a significant difference.
Another thing I wanted to comment on:
"ok I agree over the last 100 years, the temperature is about 1 degree higher... We're not dying from that...Nor would we all die if it rose another 1-2 degrees over the next 100 years... In fact, the Earth might be a more pleasant place should that occur! But even still, why is the Ice cap in Antartica getting BIGGER if this warming is occuring which we agree that we THINK is occuring..."
I think it's safe to say Antarctic Ice cap is not shrinking and probably adding. And I see no reason why if global temperature is rising that Antarctic could not add significant amounts of ice to the Ice cap. Even at the most northern part [closest to Equator] and in the warmest times of the year it hardly ever gets much above freezing. Most of the continent never gets anywhere near to freezing point. If average temperature of Antarctic were to increase by 10 C, it could still add ice to the ice cap. And if there ever is a significant increase in global water vapor, it's possible there could be more snow in the desert like continent of Antarctic- thereby adding very significant amounts of ice.

- You don't think people should refrain from burning coal...
- If coal is burned properly... The only fumes are a CO2+ a little bit of pure C
- It costs money to burn coal properly, so that would be "economically irrational". (n/t)
- Opps I meant to type: If coal is burned properly... The only fumes are a CO2+ a little bit of pure S
- What I think has little to do with it.
