If coal is burned properly... The only fumes are a CO2+ a little bit of pure C

No evil fumes... In fact the fumes only occur because factories and power plants are forced to burn coal ineffiently so that uninformed enviro-whacos won't see the slightly black colored smoke...Inefficent burning produces more emmissions but a more pleasantly appearing white colored smoke.

Thus more pollution, but happier neighbors.
