Why we need the direct experience

because we know the believers so desperately need the phenomenon that they can no longer critically examine the data and make an honest attempt to find alternate explanations for anomalous phenomena. Their witnesses are no longer credible, even when they are honest.

By projecting our own historical experience, I think it is pretty safe to say any alien technology far advanced to ours will be unrecognizeable as technology; it will appear biological, meteorological, perhaps even supernatural. UFOs that look like metal saucers with portholes are about as realistic as the motorized balloons of Victorian science fiction. As for the biology of alien species, the one thing we CAN be sure of is that they won't look like us, bipedal humanoids who are similar enough to us that they can communicate with us telepathically. This is as absurd as the crew of the Enterprise finding aliens who speak American-accented English.

We also need the direct experience because of the existence of a UFO/anomaly industry that feeds off this mania with its websites and magazines, and sensationalistic TV shows; a parasitic fan base that recycles the same old names and stories and explanations long after they have been discredited. Even honest UFO researchers such as the one I briefly worked for, are convinced that this UFO Mafia, like the Psychic Mafia, exploit the gullibility of their fans and make realistic research in this field impossible.

That's why skeptics can no longer accept anything short of alien hardware in their hands as evidence. To put it bluntly, these people lie.
