re: The value of the Identity Card

wouldn't a single identity card make it easier to 'erase' a person? Give it some thought.

In America we have a certain bias against ever being put in a position where a government offical can look down his nose and say "Your Papers are NOT in order".

We already have a national ID number in the form of a Social Security number. Like it or not it is used as such everywhere. Try doing anything without providing that number in America and you will find how powerful that number is.

I'm not so oppposed to the National ID card as I used to be. Its certainly no worse than using a SSN for everything it wasn't intended for. However, the problems I do forsee is once you start dumping the data together I think there is a higher potential for abuse. Imagine how easy identity theft could be with single point access to everything. Then there is the issue of compartmentalization of your private information. Do I really want the IRS to have access to my Medical records or my driving record, my credit score? Does my doctor need to see that I own firearms? If I belong to the NRA is my insurance going to put me in a different category? You see where it could be abused I hope.
