A clue?

We have discussed many times before my own opinion that many sightings are the result of atmospheric distortions (mirages, Fata Morgana, etc.) of natural and artificial light sources. Remember our discussion of Min-min lights?

An especially sharp inversion, or a jet stream standing wave form, might result in a diffuse mirror of the scale that is being discussed. "A mile across." That's about right for some atmospheric wave forms.

Given my perspective clouded by my own pet theory, this quote from an eye-witness jumped out at me.

"I looked back up there at it and I can see what I would call a ‘mirage’ coming off of it. It wasn’t steam. I don’t know really – I’ve seen it like on a hot highway how the heat waves come up. And this was coming down."
