I suppose it could have been different.
I suppose America could be full of unbothered natives today, living short lives in huts and skin tents in a pristine land of forests, plains, and clean rivers, watching the jet contrails pass by overhead on their way around the world.
Seriously, there's no denying the Indians were handed the crappy end of the stick. Capitalism, property rights and land purchase? Even those few times that these ideals were even bothered with, the contracts were rarely honored or deals kept.
On the other hand, when we're talking about who was where first, I notice that most Latinos are...well...Latino. It's not like Spanish was invented in Mexico or Central America.
