In Europe, the most advanced socialists reside. It sounds attractive to the American hard pressed to pay his mortgage or acquire health insurance. It sounds like an easier ride.
Well it is an easier ride. But it comes with a terrible price to horrible to accept.
As they pay your bills, give you health insurance and keep you sheltered - your worth to them progressively decreases. Eventually, when you get old - the society doesn't value you or appreciate you as an individual. You become a burden. They can't wait for you to die. The young look at you like you are eating their rightful meal.
That's the very soul of "benign" socialism today. It manifests in double-charging widows for their dead spouses "health insurance" fee for decades after they have died to pay for the young. It manifests in refusal for operations, drugs and treatments - just like the sleaziest HMO. It manifests in increasingly smaller services, poorer living conditions and a permanent class of druggies akin to our welfare culture. Taxes increase, services decline. THe benign models of socialism don't work - they only work when they tip in favor of capitalism and don't leech too much too fast.
Yes benign socialism is like a tapeworm. It can feed as long as the host feeds. But if it feeds too much - the host starves to death as does the tapeworm shortly afterwords. Germany, France, Belgium, Sweden and the rest will only hold out as long as their corporate hosts, Mercedes, Ikea, Phillips and all the rest keep healthy.
