I see society as a mechanism to provide mutual support and cooperation. You see it as an arena for individual enterprise and opportunity.
You made a similar point before when you came up with the most benign definition of socialism I'd ever seen, and I figured back then it would take too much to bridge the gap, but I'm going to give it a quick shot:
The word to remember is coercion, and voluntary. The term "mutual support and cooperation" does not imply force.
It makes one hell of a difference if someone tries to talk me into using a different kind of light bulb, or eat transfats, or someone makes it the law of the land that I have to. And that's pretty much it in a nutshell.
You are using the term "society" way too loosely. My concern in these discussions is typically with the proper functions and limits of government.
The details: Ayn Rand's "The Nature of Government."
