There really aren't a lot of "moderates." Most of those are liberals who just get irritated at being classed as liberals. Remember, most people consider themselves to be "the middle" no matter where they actually are, and feel like "moderate" or "independent" is a nice cosmopolitan way to answer a question about their views and doesn't get them in any trouble.
You poll any "moderate" on a dozen major issues, and see how many answers follow liberal lines and how many follow conservative ones.
Why vote for McCain, a "sort of" liberal when there are real ones to vote for? And why should conservatives vote for a liberal at all? Voting for Obama isn't the only other choice, you know. I don't know who McCain thinks he's convincing. Polls for November seem to show moderates going to the Democrats so far.
