I'm not sure how tired I'd have to be to come up with a number other than "50" for states in the union. Ask me to name them all on the fly and you'd have me over a barrel.
Seriously, to be fair, this kind of "brain fart" is most often the result of two thoughts colliding when you're trying to say something. In this case I theorize that Obama was trying to do some math quickly in his head to subtract the number of states he had visited from "50" (he says he's been in every state except Alaska and Hawaii). I think he came up with "47" somehow and the two numbers smacked into each other in his head.
I just found a previous blooper here, which pretty much proves my theory. Obama obviously has had a "47 state" talking point he's been using a lot (if a bit erratically). And there's your mental collision.
We've all done this. A common flub is trying to choose between two words at once during a conversation and ending up spitting out a combination word nobody's ever heard of before.
The real point I'm making is if McCain had done this, it would have been a "senility" talking point for Democrats for the rest of the year. I fully expect the "senile McCain" attack to be a major front in this election year, and you will see a LOT of normal flubs being blown out of proportion by people like...well, like you.
