My grandparents on both sides were share croppers. I've had uncles and aunts work hard and strive for a better life. Some of them made it firmly into the upper middle class, others live paycheck to paycheck.
My dad is one of the struggling ones. He's a pretty good guy, but he refuses to hold down a job. He's always looking for a reason to quit. Back when he was younger he quit a few great paying jobs when duck season came around. As long as he has money for his cigarette addiction, he's happy. Then he bitches and moans about how it's hard for a "poor boy" to make it in this world. The disconnect he has as to why it's hard for him to have a good living is amazing. Luckily both my brother and I learned from his behavior growing up.
One of my dad's younger brothers owns a floor covering business. He's worth several million dollars. The guy's got more drive and charisma than just about anyone I know. He's hustled his entire life to get where he is now, and he's earned every penny.
Trust me, drive and the will to succeed count for a great deal. I know from personal experience.

I came from a poor family.
