Bases

Read my post down below.

Just the fact that U.S. troops are stationed in Iraq is not, all by itself, necessarily a bad thing. We have had thousands of troops everywhere for decades. (Excel file)

By the end of the Cold War, something like 20 percent of our entire force was stationed in other people's countries--about 450,000 troops.

Nobody really cared because nobody was shooting at them. Of course during the Cold War, the potential for being shot at or worse was always there, and being a tripline for a North Korean attack isn't the safest job in the world either. But someone deployed to most of these places wasn't keeping their family awake worrying.

At some point, you would ideally want someone being deployed to Iraq to have their primary complaint be the weather.

When McCain said something about 100 years, he was talking about the kind of safe deployment we had in Germany, not a war situation. He said that in his comment. The Left will lie about this all year of course, but there it is.

Even Iraq's dangers are becoming less for U.S. troops. If the casualty rate drops to an average of 10 per month or less, Iraq will officially be statistically safer than Washington D.C. was back in the early 90s.
