So the government gets raped by Big Capitalism, and it's all government's fault...for, what? wearing provocative clothing, and the pirates of Wall Street are blameless because they just couldn't help themselves? Typical, as is the "solution": The government should lay back and try to enjoy it, or failing that, think of the flag, but whatever, the government should surrender itself to the priapic majesty of Capitalism.
Which, given that little phrase "of the people, by the people, and for the people", means that Americans who aren't members of the wealthy elite should just learn to enjoy the rough love of Big Capitalism.
Big government's just a natural extension of the basic philosophy of checks-and-balances. The more power gets concentrated among the wealthy elite, the more governmental power is required to push back. If you want small government, return to the time of Adam Smith, when economic powers were relatively small and diffuse, and even a tiny infant government had sufficient power to act as a counterweight. The Revolution was about diffusing power and breaking its concentration, and economic power doesn't get a special pass.
Big Capitalism bears far more responsibility for creating the mortgage meltdown than ineffectual government regulators.
