Two facts:
--Perception and emotion have a lot to do with economics in this country. Look at how the stock market rises and falls with every whim of the headlines. You don't think headlines about the housing market affect the perceptions of those buying and selling?
--Most of those working in the media would give a kidney to see a Democratic president in 2008.
That pretty much tells the story.

That just has to do with the constant screams of "Doom! Doom!" from the media. And others.
I don't watch network or cable news. I do hear radio news updates, and go through my daily paper. Granted I have limited data points, but it's still instructive to see what gets constant play, and what gets tossed off on the back pages. I've heard about ten times as much on the low figures on new housing sales today as I heard a few days back on the improvement on existing housing sales.

(Its not as bad as the MSM makes it out to be!!! honest!)

I'm not convinced that our economic growth is being driven mostly by equity credit, but that's another subject.
As of last March, foreclosures were running at about half a percent of all loans (not just subprime ones). If every subprime mortgage where there have been late payments went to foreclosure (not likely), that could go as high as 2 or 3 percent.
This "crisis" is being sold to us by people who want panic. Remember, split the actual numbers away from the speculation and predictions.

The news story could just as easily have read 98.3 percent of loans not in foreclosure. I have a hard time believing problems with less than 2 percent of all loans is going to flatten the economy.- TB Dec. 2007

The delinquency rate is about 6 percent, and the foreclosure start rate at about 2 percent. These are indeed historically high figures, but the vast majority of homeowners are not in trouble.- TB Mar. 2008
Subprime ARM loans are about 7 percent of all loans, but run about 42 percent of the foreclosures in process.
Now all he has left to do is try to blame it on someone else, he cant really get away with saying there really isnt a problem anymore....

IT'S SCHUMER'S FAULT FOR POINTING IT OUT!!!!
