A funny thing about Devo is that they had their roots in the marketing/advertising world. Essentially, they are hip businessmen. I think they are still working, too, I see hints and flashes of their style on TV commercials all the time; I think those colorful and stylish "Target" ads are connected with some of the band members, but don't quote me on that. At the very least, they are very reminiscent of Devo's art direction.
I have a great deal of respect for artists, they may be goofy, and they may be flakes, but they have an uncanny way of sensing where the culture is going, way before anyone else does. Sometimes they don't even realize their prescience, it's like they're somehow unconsciously channelling the Future. If you listen to them carefully, they will provide you with all the warning you need. It's no surprise the forces of reaction have such an instinctive dislike for them.
"Are we not men? We are Devo."
